Dua Lipa turns 30 today, and she took this milestone birthday as an opportunity to relax, play, and explore Jamaica with boyfriend Callum Turner. It sounds like a pretty perfect way to wind down one's twenties, made even more perfect by an absolutely mesmerizing manicure that made it into some of the singer's photo memories of her trip.

Lipa posted an enviable carousel of vacation slides to Instagram on August 21, showing how she went snorkeling, ate local fruit, relaxed with a book (Lipa loves to read), and generally enjoyed the beauty of Jamaica. The most adorable slides show how she helped baby sea turtles make their first trek to the ocean, and in the second photo, you can see she even gave a couple of the little guys a close-up look at her amazing manicure by nail artist Michelle Humphrey.

If you've been paying attention to celebrity manicures, you know that polka dot nails are having a moment. But Lipa, ever the nail-art lover, reinvented the spotty look with what Humphrey is calling the “molten bubble orb mani.”

“It's a playful clash of contrasting colors layered with blooming gel to create that dreamy diffused effect, and then topped with a mix of silver beads and bubble aura beads for fun and dimension,” Humphrey tells Allure. She started the psychedelic design with a base mix of high-impact shades like bright yellow, fiery red, dark blue, deep green, and opaque nude. Then, she created a variety of patterns over the nails in various shades. “Some nails had additional colors layered on top for even more impact. The look was completed using a jewelry gel to secure the aurora bubble beads and molten silver beads for that dimensional bubble orb effect.”

You can get a close look at the masterpiece—and the turtle cuties—right here.

If you're anything like me, first of all, hi bestie, and secondly, your default mental picture of bangs is probably straight and blunt. Or straight and wispy. But probably straight. You hear a lot of talk about the cool confidence of curly bangs, too, which have become more popular over the last few years. But if you're still anything like me, you have wavy hair, and you've long wondered, Where are the wavy bangs?

I'm not talking about blown-out side bangs with a bit of a curve. I'm talking piecey, wavy, air-dried bangs. It feels like a rarity, even among those of us with naturally wavy hair.

But over the last week, Zoë Kravitz has been like, “Hold my round brush,” and given us the wavy bangs that have been missing from the fringe discourse.

Kravitz arrived at a photocall for her new movie, Caught Stealing, in Paris on August 21 looking absolutely ethereal in an lacy, off-white slip dress. The romantic vibes carried over into her low-key but super-glowy makeup look by Nina Park and long, flowy hair by Nikki Nelms.

Pulled half back, her nearly waist-length waves have an air-dried look, with some definition but flexibility to frizz just a teensy, lovely bit. And toping it off are slightly side-swept bangs with the same wave pattern, creating a separated style where each piece kind of does its own thing, and blending into a longer face-framing tendril.

Zoë Kravitz posing in a cream colored slip dressPhoto: Getty Images

The look keeps with how she's been wearing her hair for this weeks Caught Stealing press events, for which she's been wearing her hair hair totally loose. The wavy bangs and not-quite-fully-dry feel gives poolside vibes, like she recently took a tip and she's letting it dry in all of its naturally wavy glory as she chills on in a cabana. But make it red carpet.

As a recent recipient of new bangs and a wavy-haired girl, I am absolutely taking Kravitz's hair as inspiration to let my bangs just do what they do.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are foot scrubs good for your feet?

“Foot scrubs can be beneficial, provided there are no underlying risk factors like systemic conditions (such as diabetes mellitus) or existing skin conditions,” explains Saylee Tulpule, DPM, a DC-based, board-certified podiatrist and Kerasal brand ambassador. She notes that exfoliating dead skin can help other moisturizers absorb better, which is key for people who struggle with cracked and dry feet. Look out for ingredients such as salicylic acid, urea, and petrolatum,” Dr. Tulpule notes.

What’s the best way to apply a foot scrub?

Before applying a foot scrub, Dr. Tulpule suggests washing your feet with warm water and soap to get skin damp and prepped for exfoliation. Then, grab the scrub and follow the product's instructions on dosage and massage technique. Rinse off and finish with a moisturizer for baby-soft skin.

How often should you exfoliate your feet?

As with any part of your body, over-exfoliating can be detrimental to skin health. “Limit exfoliation to one to two times per week,” Dr. Tulpule advises. “More consistent scrubbing can strip healthy skin cells, potentially leading to damage and infection.”

However, if the skin on your feet is particularly sensitive, consider using a foot scrub even more sparingly. "I would recommend [body scrubs] only once or twice a month for people with sensitive skin," explains David Kim, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. "It's also important to moisturize the skin immediately after showering when it's slightly damp."

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best foot scrubs, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team of in-house writers and editors, as well as contributors, along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more about our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from are folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Whether swept on top of a makeup look or brushed across bare skin, the best blushes play up a healthy glow—or stand in for one when the skin is looking rather dull. “When I’m choosing a blush, I go for shades that show up naturally when your skin is flushed,” says makeup artist Tonya Riner. “Just give your cheeks a little pinch and see what comes through,” she adds. Some editors prefer sheerer finishes, while others go all out (some may call it “blush blindness,” but who cares?) and sweep on their favorite blushes with abandon. In a quest to find the best blushes in all types of formulas—creams, liquids, and powders, oh my!—and color palettes, we’ve swatched, tapped, and swirled to bring you this edit of the absolute must-have blushes.

Why we love it: It please, please, pleases Sabrina Carpenter to wear Armani Beauty’s Luminous Silk Cheek Tint, and she’s not the only one who calls this her favorite blush. After much swiping and blending, the Allure team singled this out as the best overall liquid blush. Not only does the silky product blend out like a dream, but it also feels light as air on the skin. But don’t let its lightweight texture fool you: The blush stays put for up to 12 hours and leaves a dewy finish in one of 12 shades. The secret to the makeup product’s staying power is found in a unique water-in-oil emulsion that fuses a thin film of color onto the skin.

“This blush changed my mind about fiery tones. Yes, it’s pigmented (so applying it gradually is key), but it blends beautifully into a natural-looking ‘I just had a really great date’ kind of flush. It sets in place for hours, too—lasting through that date and whatever might follow.” —Jesa Marie Calaor, senior editor

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

"I'm probably blush blind, but I don't care, and you can't stop me. Armani's Liquid Silk Blush is one of my favorites—it's not super sheer (which I love because when I'm wearing blush, I want people to know!) but blends easily, so I think it's a great formula for beginners because it's forgiving. I'm wearing Delicate Mauve, which is, to date, the most perfect dusty pink shade I've found for my particular skin tone. If I could wave a wand and naturally produce that shade on my cheeks, I would, but until then, I'll stick to wearing this blush pretty much every day.” —Sarah Hoffmann, commerce producer

Why we love it: The undisputed champion of all powder blushes—at least, if you ask Allure editors—is Kosas’s Blush Is Life. Each shade reflects a combination of two subtly shimmery hues, and the result is a your-natural-flush-but-better glow. Plus, while the blush is baked, it doesn’t have the dryness of some other baked formulas. Whipped up with squalane and hyaluronic acid, the blush has a moisturizing feel—it certainly doesn't reflect the dusty and dry formulas of years past. Bonus: Blush Is Life is dermatologist-tested and deemed safe for sensitive skin.

“Did Kosas read my mind when brainstorming names? My inclination is yes because blush has been my life for the past year or so, and it doesn't seem to be leaving anytime soon. My preference has always been swayed towards cream blushes, but Kosas has me giving powders a second chance. Blush is Life is light, airy, and definitely doesn't cake or settle into texture like other powder blushes tend to do. Hype (a warm poppy pink) brightens my face instantly.” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Tester feedback from shopping director Shanna Shipin

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“Blush truly IS life when you have this in your makeup kit. These colors are simultaneously new and classic; Heartbeat is a juicy nectarine-style red, and Chills is an ultraviolet-style berry, for instance. These are pigments we're familiar with, but with the kind of zest I like to think only the LA-based Kosas can bring. They're truly weightless (as an eczema sufferer and a fine-line lady, I can feel and see when a product isn't so seamless) and so smooth, which lends itself to an easy blend. Because the pigment payoff is high, though, it's not as goofproof as some cream-based blushes, so make sure you have a good brush to diffuse the color for a more natural look.” —Shanna Shipin, shopping director

One of the best multitasking balms on the market, the French beauty salve is infused with red camellia oil that makes any area of skin it touches feel (and look) like satin. Whether used on bare skin or as part of a softly blurred makeup look, the balm peps up the cheeks with a natural-looking rush of color; it also doubles as a cute, plumping lip balm.

"It is so rare for me to hit the pan for a blush but I SCRAPE the beautiful bits of this blush when I get down to the end. I use this for everything and everywhere—of course as a subtle flush or wow-worthy pop of color on the cheeks, over the nose for a cute sunkissed look, and on the eyes for some pigment. One thing that may be underrated for this blush is that it is so, so great on the lips as well. I use a liner and the blush, and I'm set; it's multipurpose in the best way. I have eczema-laden skin, and it hasn't flared up over many months of use, it also doesn't accentuate any dry spots, and instead leaves the skin with a healthy, bouncy-looking finish.

This formula melts into the fingers and onto the skin, so you don't need to tug to get it to blend. It's simultaneously buildable and forgivable if you add too much. The shade range is great (Terracotta is my all-time favorite for my medium skin), and while you can use your fingers, I highly recommend the corresponding dual-ended brush—it is so versatile and even blends skin tint foundations like a dream!" —Shanna Shipin, shopping director

Why we love it: There’s a reason Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Stick has a nursery-evoking name. Though some blushes accentuate texture, fine lines, and wrinkles on mature skin, this satiny formula seems to rewind the effects of time (if only until the nightly makeup-removal routine.) Infused with jojoba seed oil and grape and raspberry-seed extracts, the cream blush hydrates the skin and lends it a youthful, lit-from-within glow. Pro tip: Add a touch of blush to your lips for the same, delightfully flushed color there.

“While I'm a powder blush stan, there's nothing like this cream formula to give my skin the most natural-looking pop of color ever. The velvety texture melts into my skin and feels like nothing, and I love that I can dab a little on my nose and chin to make my skin look almost sunkissed—like I just got back from a long walk. Plus, a tiny bit goes a long way, so this stick will last me forever.” —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

Why we love it: This Best of Beauty Award-winning palette has all the fixings for a top-of-the-line face base. Stocked with six shades that can be used as foundation, bronzer, or contour on a range of skin tones, the star of the palette may very well be the four cream blushes in buildable shades. Mix up a custom color by blending a few, and follow the brand’s suggested application method for a lifted effect: after dotting the blush onto the apples of the cheeks, use your fingers to blend it upwards. The blushes sweep on with a skin-like finish and offer long-lasting coverage.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best way to find a blush shade that works for me?

“People can find their best blush shades by leaning into colors that have the same undertone as their skin,” says makeup artist Melissa Murdick. “As an example, I have a cool pink undertone, so I tend to look best in pink shades that lean a bit mauve, which is itself a cool shade.” Murdick also recommends checking out blushes in-store and swatching several shades on your arm. “Sometimes, comparison is the easiest way for you to say I actually really like the way that looks instead of just guessing from the packaging,” Murdick explains.

What type of blush looks the most natural?

“Using a cream or liquid blush in a soft rosy or peachy tone can give you the most natural-looking flush,” says makeup artist Ish Bermudez Jr. “Apply it with a light hand and blend well for a flawless finish.” He adds that opting for a satin or luminous formula is a great way to enhance a healthy glow without making skin appear greasy or shiny.

What’s the best way to apply blush?

Whatever makes you feel the best! “There are plenty of different placements for blush that you can experiment with to see what suits you best—up high on the cheekbones, on the apples of the cheek, etc.—but the key to all placements is to make sure the edges are nicely blended,” says Murdick. “There should be a strongest point of color that gradually fades off into your skin so you don’t end up with an unnatural patch of blush.” If necessary, she recommends using a foundation sponge or a blush brush to tap along the edges of the blush and help it melt into the skin.

What blush stays on all day?

“For all-day wear, liquid blushes and stains are your go-to,” says makeup artist Karen Dupiche. “These formulas are long-lasting, lightweight, and smudge-proof, making them perfect for long days or humid environments.” Plus, these formulas layer well, offering buildable coverage that stays vibrant for hours, she says. For application techniques that can boost a blush’s longevity, Dupiche recommends taking the following steps:

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide shade range inclusive of consumers with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is its packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best blushes, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and makeup artists to review the products. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product's performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Matching your makeup to your outfit has long been one of the best and easiest makeup tricks in the book, but leave it to Chappell Roan to do it her way and put a twist on the matchy-matchy look. While regular folks would match their eye shadow to a color in their dress or top, picking up a shade of bronze, green, or purple and mimicking that in their makeup palette, Roan matched her stage makeup almost exactly to her dress.

We always pay close attention to Roan's performance makeup and outfits—never forget the Statue of Liberty homage from Governor's Ball 2024, complete with green body paint! Her look from the Sziget Festival in Budapest, Hungary, did not disappoint, with delightful detail after delightful detail to pore over. The bodice of her circus tutu-inspired costume was a zoomed-in closeup of her own face, and that face was wearing the same eyeshadow, ultra-pale, nearly white foundation, and gleaming golden highlighter as her IRL counterpart.

Chappell Roan wears a tutustyle costume with her own face on the bodice. She wears similar makeup to that of the dress.Getty Images

Both the real Roan and the dress version wore a bright aqua blue shadow brushed all the way up the lid, with a hint of amethyst purple dusted underneath her '30s-style skinny brows. A shiny true gold pigment was applied to her cheekbone all the way up to her temple, and her lips were painted a gorgeous ruby red. Was the onstage makeup inspired by the dress, or was the dress inspired by the makeup? Is this the fashion and beauty version of the “chicken or the egg” situation?

Chappell Roan wears a tutustyle dress with her own face on it as well as mini versions of her head as a headpiece.Getty Images

The matchy-matchy makeup wasn't the only meta moment in the show, either. At one point, Roan wore a headpiece of, well, her own head, complete with her signature long, flowing red curls, and carried a wand with yet another mini version of her head placed atop. If you zoom in, you'll see that those mini Chappell heads are also wearing the same blue shadow and red lipstick as the singer and her dress, as well as teeny little Elizabethan ruffs around their necks. I'm seeing double… no, triple… no, quadruple!

Melasma is incredibly common, and just like freckles, there’s no rule that says you have to cover it up. But the best melasma concealers can work wonders if you're looking to disguise it. Unlike your average dark spot, “melasma is a pigmentary disorder that appears as lacy, reticulated brown patches,” Corey L. Hartman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, previously told Allure. The good news? Often triggered by sun exposure, hormones, or heat, these patches are no match for today’s pigment-packed, makeup artist-approved concealers.

The best of the bunch don’t just cover; they brighten, smooth, and seamlessly blend into skin for a natural finish. Some pair beautifully with a peach or orange color corrector to neutralize discoloration: “By using a corrector, you would still need full-coverage concealer but less of it, which creates the illusion of more natural-looking skin,” says Talia Sparrow, a makeup artist based in London. Other concealers are true multitaskers infused with skin care ingredients like brightening vitamin C, blurring minerals, and tranexamic acid to target pigmentation. No matter which one you choose, you can expect skin that looks even, fresh, and radiant while still looking effortlessly like you.

And if constant touch-ups aren’t your thing, “it’s crease-resistant and impressively long-wearing, yet still feels completely weightless,” says Ray. This concealer stays flawless for up to 24 hours—proof of just how enduring this formula really is.

Why it's worth it: Melasma is notoriously worsened by sun exposure, which makes daily sunscreen non-negotiable, but Ciele Conceal & Protect SPF 50+ Spot Concealer delivers both defense and coverage in one. The buildable, full-coverage formula disguises hyperpigmentation without feeling heavy, while zinc oxide provides broad-spectrum SPF 50+ to help keep discoloration from worsening. Infused with tranexamic acid to visibly target dark spots and niacinamide to brighten and even tone, its creamy texture blends effortlessly, whether worn solo or layered over foundation. While this concealer offers solid SPF protection, you’ll still want to apply sunscreen underneath to cover the rest of your face.

“As a lover of Ciele's Tint + Protect Serum Foundation, I was already bought into Ciele's concealer—but when I put it on over my lingering melasma from two pregnancies? Sold! Despite having such an amazingly strong SPF, this formula feels so elegant—no splotchiness, no scent, and it's the Goldilocks texture for me. It's a bit creamy while still being lightweight, which is so nice since thin concealers tend to just sit in my wrinkles or accentuate my eczema patches. It has nice, buildable coverage, which I like since I do not like to look like I'm wearing makeup. Why it's worth it: Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer was a repeat favorite among many of the experts we chatted with, and it also snagged a 2024 Readers’ Choice Award. “This concealer has the ability to correct and brighten hyperpigmentation while staying creamy and hydrating for dry areas,” says Carl Ray, a makeup artist based in Washington, D.C. If your skin is on the oilier side, you’re also in luck, since “it’s a self-setting concealer with buildable coverage,” adds Tomy Rivero, a makeup artist based in New York City and Los Angeles. “This means you can color correct while still wearing lightweight makeup that doesn’t require a powder to lock it in.” Mineral tone-balancing powders optically correct (not mask) imperfections for a fresh, radiant look, while light-diffusing mineral powders blur fine lines and even skin tone. Plus, grape seed extract keeps the formula creamy and skin hydrated.

It’s one of Ray’s go-to picks for dry skin, thanks to a hydrating formula packed with glycerin, vitamin E, and caffeine that smooths and plumps. It also helps diminish puffiness and dark circles, making this cream concealer a smart choice if those concerns come hand in hand with melasma. Frequently Asked Questions

    What cancels out melasma?

To cover melasma, the key is to start with the right color corrector for your skin tone. “I would use a colour corrector first on the darker parts of the skin—depending on skin tone, a peach, yellow, or orange corrector is needed to neutralise the discolouration, and green for any redness,” says Kelly Cornwell, a makeup artist based in London.

After applying primer, Cornwell suggests starting with your foundation to see how much it covers. Then, apply concealer to build up the coverage until the darker marks start to disappear. “I like using a brush to place and build the color, then going over it with a damp sponge to seamlessly blend and create a natural finish—without lifting too much product,” says Rivero. “Finish with a light dusting or pressed application of translucent setting powder to lock everything in place,” says Cornwell.

When it comes to the best eye creams for puffy eyes, the right formula can make all the difference between looking wide awake or like you hit the snooze button five times. Puffy eyes might feel like they happen overnight, but the causes often run deeper. “Bags under the eyes are caused when the tissue structures and muscles supporting your eyelids are weak, and the skin may start to sag,” says Richard Bottiglione, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Phoenix, Arizona.

As skin loosens with age, it creates more room for fluid to collect—especially overnight, when lying flat slows circulation. “Salty meals, allergies, and even lack of sleep can make matters worse. While poor sleep doesn’t directly cause fluid retention, it slows blood and lymphatic flow, making it harder for fluid to drain,” he says. As a result, you’ll find lingering swelling, darker circles, and eyes that broadcast how tired you are.

The good news: Certain eye creams can help counteract undereye puffiness. (That said, if the issue is more structural—like sagging skin or fat pads—you might be looking at an in-office treatment such as blepharoplasty.) Both retinol and caffeine work to reduce puffiness around the eye and are two ingredients I recommend looking for in an undereye cream,” says Anna Chacon, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Miami. Caffeine provides a quick fix by constricting blood vessels, while retinol offers longer-term improvement for both swelling and the appearance of dark circles. “Deep moisturizers like hyaluronic acid are also key to soothing puffy, dehydrated skin,” she says. Ahead, the best dermatologist-approved formulas with these key ingredients to help de-puff, brighten, and revive tired eyes.

Caffeine is a standout here, helping to visibly reduce swelling, while hyaluronic acid deeply moisturizes and plumps dry skin. “Hyaluronic acid’s hydrating properties—as well as the formula’s grape flower cell extract and squalane—are particularly beneficial if you’re also experiencing darkness or duller skin under the eyes,” says Dr. Chacon.

"This is pretty much everything I look for in an eye cream: easy to use, lightweight, and powerful enough to handle my undereye bags and crow's feet in one fell swoop. I love that it absorbs immediately, and the hydration sets in ASAP to make my eye area look dewier and brighter. It's also made a big difference in the shadowing under my eyes from the puffiness, so they look smoother and more taut." —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

Why it's worth it: We couldn’t think of a more fitting acronym than A.G.E. for an eye cream. In this case, it stands for advanced glycation end-products, which are the molecules that weaken collagen production and elastin, leading to sagging skin that makes fine lines, wrinkles, and undereye puffiness more noticeable. SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Advanced Eye Cream, a 2023 Best of Beauty Award winner, is designed to combat these signs of aging. “This eye cream includes caffeine as a beneficial ingredient, which will visibly reduce the appearance of puffy undereyes and dark circles,” says Dr. Chacon. Alongside caffeine, proxylane helps restore firmness, blueberry extract provides antioxidant defense, and Matrixyl 3000 peptides boost skin’s resilience.

"Thanks to genetics and my big cheeks, I've had crow's feet since grade school. The larger smile-induced lines have never bothered me before, but as I've gotten older, there's been a proliferation of fine lines around my eyes, along with overall thinning and loss of suppleness in that area. Lifelong eyelid eczema—and rubbing at said eczema (naturally!)—have not only contributed to premature aging but have also made it very difficult for me to find an eye cream that doesn't irritate my skin. Thankfully, SkinCeuticals' A.G.E Advanced Eye Cream does exactly what I need: it hydrates the area while making it appear tighter and more plump overall without causing irritation. While I haven't seen the darkness under my eyes corrected just yet, I have noticed a plumper, more alive, look to my eyes." —Shanna Shipin, shopping director

Why it's worth it: ISDIN Isdinceutics Vital Eyes Night Eye Cream tackles puffiness from multiple angles, addressing fluid retention, inflammation, and poor circulation that can cause fluid to linger even longer. “Caffeine eye cream is excellent for helping limit water retention,” says Morayo Adisa, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Chicago, Illinois. She adds that cold compresses can also reduce swelling, and if that’s not handy, the formula comes with a cooling metal applicator—which you can stash in the fridge—that offers a soothing, de-puffing boost. Beyond caffeine, this cream leans on licorice root to calm inflammation, marine extracts like wakame and red algae to support circulation and balance fluids, and rice extract to brighten. Meanwhile, melatonin strengthens the skin’s natural defenses overnight, and hyaluronic acid provides deep hydration to smooth fine lines for brighter and more refreshed eyes by morning.

“I usually toss applicators as soon as I open packaging but like what this sizable metal ball adds to the experience, so it's staying! It's extra cooling, doubling as a massage tool I circle around my eyes, and I find it actually helps the product sink in, so I barely have to use my finger pads at all. While you need to use an eye cream long-term to see more noticeable effects, I'm already quite impressed. After my first few uses, I didn't feel the need to apply concealer! (And I always feel like I need at least a dab under my eyes to hide discoloration and make me look awake, so this is major.)” —Sarah Han, commerce writer

It will leave the skin looking firm and youthful as it tackles multiple eye concerns,” says Dr. Chacon. This formula combines pure retinol with a retinol booster complex to fortify and thicken delicate under-eye skin, offering better support—which in turn makes puffiness less visible while stimulating collagen for a smoother, more resilient look. And to keep the delicate eye area calm, La Roche-Posay’s signature thermal spring water provides a soothing, antioxidant boost, helping ease irritation while addressing the water retention that often contributes to puffiness.

Why it’s worth it: Retinaldehyde (retinal) is often considered the more effective cousin of retinol, and Avène Retrinal Eyes Advanced 3-in-1 Eye Cream harnesses that strength to target puffiness, fine lines, and dark circles. “Retinal is a direct precursor to retinoic acid and considered more potent than retinol with better tolerance,” says Pooja Rambhia, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. Unlike retinol, which requires two conversions to become active, retinaldehyde needs only one—making it both more efficient and less irritating for those with sensitive skin. To specifically address puffiness, the formula also features sodium dextran sulfate, an ingredient that helps improve microcirculation and minimize fluid buildup under the eyes. Refreshing and fast-absorbing, it’s the perfect little pick-me-up.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best eye cream for puffy undereyes?

The best eye treatments often combine ingredients that work in multiple ways. “There are different approaches to treating puffiness in undereye skin depending on the underlying cause: caffeine to decrease water retention, peptides to support the collagen and elasticity, and retinoids for long-term improvement,” says Dr. Adisa. Skin-care products with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid can offset dryness, while calming botanicals and antioxidants reduce inflammation that can make puffiness more noticeable.

Why we love it: After protective or heavily gelled styles, your scalp may need a detox, and Amika’s Reset Pink Charcoal Pre-Cleansing Oil is just the product for a hard reset. At first glance, it looks like a lightweight scalp oil, but the second you add water, it transforms into a milky lather that deeply cleans without stripping your strands. The oil-to-foam formula breaks down product buildup, excess oil, and scalp sweat in one shot. Pink clay and charcoal do the heavy lifting by absorbing impurities and odors, while Indian cress stem extract and sea buckthorn deliver antioxidants and vitamins to mitigate scalp irritation.

The targeted nozzle makes it easy to apply directly to the roots and part lines, which is especially helpful for protective styles or dense curls. Plus, its signature scent of vanilla, rose, sandalwood, and grapefruit leaves the scalp feeling fresh and subtly fragrant.

“What did I do before I started using this cleansing oil? I do so much with my hair: I blow-dry it, straighten it, put all kinds of leave-ins and oils in it, and I have dandruff. When I need a wash day, I feel it at the roots (hint: the strands get heavy and painful). This instantly calms my inflamed follicles and irritated scalp, and feels cooling to apply. The precision applicator makes it incredibly easy to drench my head without needing to endlessly part my hair.

Once you're in the shower, the oil turns into foam, so you can easily spread it around if you missed spots. The best part is that it's significantly helped reduce the itchiness on my scalp; if you suffer from the dreaded itch as well, I'm begging you to try the product! I'm hoping it'll help you stretch out time before you start clawing at your head, too. The only downside is that it's so deeply cleansing that I can't overuse it; I feel it start to dry out the rest of my strands if I over-apply or use it for too many washes in one week.” —Shanna Shipin, shopping director

“Amika’s Reset Pink Charcoal Scalp Cleansing Oil allows for direct application to the scalp for a detoxifying, deep cleanse result that starts at the root and spreads to the [ends]. The Amika brand says it’s perfect for all hair types, but in my professional opinion and experience, it performs best on curlier hair types and particularly those who use creams and butters and/or layer their stylers. The charcoal and clay work well in removing residual product without stripping natural moisture.” —Cataanda James, cosmetologist

I section my hair, apply the product along the part, and use my fingers to massage away flakes and gel. It’s also great for clients with dry, itchy, or flaky scalp conditions who need a non-stripping, easy-to-apply solution. The result? Softer, smoother curls that are easier to manage and ready to take on wash day without the usual tug-of-war. What benefits do pre-shampoo treatments offer for curly hair?

“Pre-shampoo treatments, commonly known as pre-poo in the textured hair community, generate hydration prior to shampoo, offer slip for easier detangling before adding water, and break down residual buildup of product and excess sebum on the scalp and lengths of the hair,” James explains. She also emphasizes their protective qualities: “[They] wrap the strands in essential nutrients and conditioning aids that absorb into the cuticle layer before the shampoo process. As a result, it encourages maximum moisture retention from start to finish for smoother, healthier hair.”

Ebony Everette highlights both universal benefits and scalp health: "[Some] pre-shampoo treatments are designed to exfoliate the scalp, which will promote healthier hair growth and build up,” while others prioritize moisture. “Curly hair tends to be drier due to its structure, which can make it harder for natural oils to travel down the hair shafts completely, so doing these treatments will allow you to lock in that extra moisture without stripping essential oils."

Who would benefit most from pre-shampoo treatments?

James explains that those with denser, coarser textures see the most benefit: "Those with highly dense, thick hair, pre-poos provides ease in the detangling process. Beginning your wash day with a pre-shampoo treatment softens the hair, making it more pliable for enhanced elasticity and easier to reach the root for sufficient detangling." She adds that “Elasticity is key to length retention in textured hair as it is responsible for that bounce back in healthy curls, reducing breakage while preserving the natural curl pattern.”

Everette highlights the broader protective benefits, particularly for chemically-treated hair: “Pre-shampoo treatments are gamechangers for anyone looking to boost their hair's health and shine, especially if you're dealing with dryness and buildup.” Another lesser-known benefit: “If you color or chemically treat your hair, pre-shampoo treatments can help protect your hair strands and extend the life of color," Everette notes. Beyond hair protection and color preservation, she notes these treatments address scalp concerns like “flakiness or excessive buildup.”

Is there a right way to apply a pre-poo for maximum absorption? Should you detangle before or after applying?

“Start applying at the ends in a downward motion, working your way up to the root, for even distribution,” James emphasizes. "It is important to ensure that no curl or strand is left uncovered—thorough saturation is key to reap full benefits of the pre-poo!" Similarly, Everette recommends: "For the best results, apply your pre-shampoo treatments to dry or slightly damp hair, section by section, to ensure complete coverage," and suggests "gently warming the product can also help it penetrate the scalp more efficiently."

In terms of what to avoid, James strongly advises against detangling dry textured hair: “You should never detangle textured and high-curl patterns when your hair is dry unless you are using a product that has been tested to perform on [dry] hair." The reason why? "Curly and textured hair needs hydration and a rich moisture foundation to prevent breakage and damage while detangling." TL;DR Detangle your hair when it has some slip to it.

    Meet the experts

How we test and review products

We always enlist a range of testers for any review, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While some can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and concerns, many are created with specific consumers and their needs in mind. When reviewing tools, we also take into account testers’ experience levels. For instance, an innovative new blow-dryer may feature industry-leading technology, but if the only people who find it intuitive to use are professional hairstylists, we have to consider this when determining whether it is worthy of a recommendation.

For our list of the pre-shampoo treatments for curly hair, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists and seasoned estheticians.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
